In 1999, Orange County Commissioner Mary Johnson recognized a gap in support services for victims and had the foresight to champion the establishment of the Victim Service Center. Two years later, on July 6, 2001, with seed money from Orange County Government, VSC became a nonprofit organization. We made it our mission to support victims and vowed to save lives in our community. We have been working tirelessly towards that mission every single day.
In the past 16 years, we have grown and serve all victims of crime, sexual assault, and traumatic circumstances in Central Florida. In 2005, VSC became the Certified Rape Crisis Center serving Orange County and in 2012, the certification expanded into Osceola County. In 2015, we began serving female inmates who had been victims of sexual violence.
Our dedicated crisis response team provides free, individualized, and confidential services for all victims of crime including sexual assault, mass causalities, domestic violence, terrorism, stalking, kidnapping, home invasion, assault/battery, and other traumatic events.
Our skilled staff operates a 24/7 crisis helpline that primary and secondary victims can call around-the-clock to receive immediate crisis intervention support. Not only does our team provide help in the moment of crisis, but we also continue to support victims throughout the duration of their healing process including case management, victim compensation, legal advocacy and court accompaniment, information and referrals, and therapy.
In an effort to best identify and serve victims, along with preventing future victimizations, in 2014, VSC created a Development and Communications Department to both increase awareness of VSC programs and services. We are active in the community educating and training Central Florida residents on Bystander Intervention, safety tips, and ways to prevent violence. We strengthened our partnerships in the community through additional MOUs and have been strengthening existing partnerships. Our team is always participating in Outreach efforts and distributing collateral with pertinent prevention information along with information on how to seek help.
So far this year, we have responded to the demand in client services and received additional funding to expand our direct care team. We have opened a new location and are now serving clients in Seminole County. And, we have diversified our workforce to meet the needs of the Central Florida community.
